We have installed 150 nos of bore wells and a of mini water supply system for community in the rural areas. We have constructed individual house hold toilets for BPL people with the support of District Water and Sanitation Mission Puri. Individual house hold toilet for poorest of the poor not included in the BPL list were constructed with the support of Water Aid. We have organized social mobilization for the better sanitation hygiene in the project area. Workshops, public meeting, rally and cultural programme etc organized at the community level. With the support of water aid UK the organization has taken a project that is sanitation intervention in Puri District focusing Pipli and delanga block under the umbrella of United Assistance Ganjam. The organization has been assisted by Sharjah Charity International (UAE) and Muslim Global Relief (UK) in implementing water sanitation projects.
We have also worked with numerous other organisations such as UNICEF, WATER AID (UK), European Union.etc. We have installed around 4000 numbers of individual household tube wells in the state of Odisha. We have also installed around 500 numbers of Electric community borewells for large community areas.
Main aim of the project is to provide safe drinking water to poor community who do not have any access to safe drinking water. 10 No.s of Elevated storage reservoir were also constructed.
Madani welfare Association as a facilitator NGO for the communities and realizing the gravity of the situation started its activities for achieving sanitation for all which will be an inclusive process, involving all stake holders at all stages, specially the local Governments, communities and grass root level institutions and groups. Therefore, to test the sustainability and establishing the community led processes it tries to develop the capacity of the different stake holders within the community. By providing
adequate trainings and exposure to the adolescent Kumari groups which are the future of the society the organization tries to develop their capacities as they able to demand and raise voices to mobilize the government resources for the society. To have access to safe drinking water for the poor and marginalized people of the society 20 no.s of new Hand pumps were installed which helped the people in summer when the water level receded to 40 ft and Govt hand pumps failed to cater the needs of the society.
In the other hand in a direct intervention it has constructed 400 no.s of IHHLs in this year for the poorest of the poor and deprived beneficiaries of the society to gain access to sanitation facilities. In the entire process the Kumari committee has done their best efforts. The adolescent girls of the society have ample leisure time and deeply interested in social activities became an asset for the WASH activities and took the responsibility to mobilize the community for making the village open defecation free. Secondly when those Kumari girls will marry they will be act as catalytic agent in their father in law’s House and village for this WASH activities.
Again, MAWA also gave the attention towards the uses of the constructed toilets by organizing community level awareness camps and meetings. It has celebrated the world toilet day and spread the awareness in the operational area. The communities, youths, women and Kumari committees were sensitized through 4 nos of capacity building programmes to promote about their water and Sanitation rights of the poorest and most marginalized people. The programmes helped ensure sustainability water sanitation facilities by empowering the members of the groups to develop community leadership and management.
In the year 2010 the organization worked closely with the communities and service providers and strengthen its understanding of working in rural areas. In the year 2010 the organization worked for hygiene practices in schools and communities by organizing Hand washing campaigns and monitored the state govts massive hand washing campaigns in schools. The key members of the partner participated in 2 nos. of workshops of Water Aid (State Level) on management of Menstrual Hygiene. The workshop on
disaster preparedness strategy and its management organized by water Aid were attended by NGO in this year. During baseline survey the people are not aware of use of ORS to prevent from diarrheal disease and this year our coordinator demonstrated ORS use and now the community became aware of preparing ORS in their house. Handwashing campaigns were also organised in the area. Proper steps that should be taken in order to the hands can be germ free were taught to the people through proper training. After coming from the Toilet hand washing must be compulsorily done was also said to the people.
